Approaching Strangers in your Direct Sales Business

Do you know that I never ask people to book parties or if they want to buy my products? Nope never. Why? Because I focused on getting really good at having conversations instead of selling my products or trying to convince people why they absolutely had to have a party. Every body always asks me, “What do you say when you hand out catalogs or drawing slips? So many people tell them, “I just don’t know what to say to people or how to ask them to have a party.”  I always tell my team good. You don’ t have to know what to say to people. What you need to do is get really good at asking people questions about your customers, listening and building relationships.

What do you mean I need to build relationships?

What I mean is people don’t want to be marketed to. They want to build relationships. They want to have conversations. Honestly they want to talk about themselves. What that means for us as business owners is we need to get really good at giving compliments, asking questions and working what we do into an every day conversation without acting like a pushing sales lady.

Here’s an example of being in a grocery store line and striking up conversation with a complete stranger:

Consultant: Oh wow, I love your shoes. I saw some like that at Macy’s. Did you get them there?

Her: Yes, I got them at them at one of the malls last week.

Consultant: They are sooo pretty. I love sparkly stuff. I do girls nights and I am always looking for fun sparkly stuff to wear. I have a sparkly product bag, but I would love shoes like that to match.

Her: Did I hear Girls Nights? What type of girls nights?

Consultant:  Oh here is my catalog, take a look. You would love it. I have girls nights where ladies can check out our fragrance systems and pick out their favorite scents for their home or oficce.

Her: Really? My girlfriends would love that.

Consultant: Omgosh, here fill out one of my drawing slips. I do a monthly drawing every month for free Scentsy products or whatever goody we have out. Fill it out and you’ll be entered to win.

Her: That is soooo coool. What type of warmers are there? Do you have pet ones?

Consultant: That is the great thing, there are so many to choose from. Some that relate to your hobbies, home decor or even sports?

Her: WOW Are you on Facebook?

Consultant: I sure am. Friend me on Facebook and send me a message when you remember which mall you got those awesome sparkly shoes so I make a mark at my Scentsy Parties.

Her: WOW thank you so much. I definitely will as soon as I get home.

Now isn’t that a fun, light conversation and way better than having the idea that you have to walk up to someone for your direct sales business and say, “Hi, Will you book a party with me?” Truth is, I didn’t book a party at all yet with that first conversation but I built a relationship. Once she finds me on Facebook I will be able to continue with the rapor and she will trust me.  Now many of you will ask, What if she doesn’t find you on Facebook? Great question. Well, remember that handy dandy drawing slip? That’s right.  Now I have her information and I can follow up. Your business will be SOLID if you really focus on follow up. Add her name and email address to your contact manager, find her Facebook and then call or Facebook her within 24 hours. DO NOT push market. Keep talking with her. Make her your new friend. Talk about the mall, talk about those sparkly shoes, talk about how it was so great meeting her and then bring up your products if she doesn’t first. 99% of the time, they fall in love with your products and are always asking for more information.

Possibility Packets for an Easy Give Away

Now I refer to these all the time as goody bags because I usually use cellophane bags or catalog bags with a handle. They make for easy handling and if you stuff them with a cute little gift, people simply love them

All you need is:
-a catalog
-an opportunity flier
-and a business card and any other fun item that will help people remember you and your business

Opportunity Packet

I always have informational goody bags with me. I put them in my car, in my purse, in my lap top bag, anywhere and everywhere. You never know when you will need them and if you get really good at having conversations like the one above, you will need them with A LOT of drawing slips all the time. Every Sunday night, I make up about 25 goody bags. My job every week is to hand out all 25 of those bags to complete strangers. If I have any left over, well then my job the following week is much harder. Push yourself to have great conversations.

Who do you leave them with?? EVERYONE!!

-grocery store, give it to the teller
-bank, send it in the tube
-gas station, give it to the clerk
-library, give it to the lady checking you out
-walmart, give it to the cashier
-doctor, leave some for the staff
-dollar store, give to the cashier
-WORK…leave in the BATHROOMS, breakrooms…
-servers….attach your bill to the mini catalog

ANYONE you come into contact with. And when you get really good at this…you not only go into the place you were originally going, but you go into whatever business is next door. Why not? You’re already THERE!

AND WHAT DO WE SAY WHEN WE HAND THEM OUT?????You don’t have to worry about it because you should be really good at striking up conversation by now but if not, just say…”Do you mind if I leave this with you” and explain in 30-45 seconds what it is

Now one more thing that’s fun to do……

You CAN get some kiddy looking goody bags and a sticker book, mini notepads, and a pack of 64 crayons at your dollar store. Put some stickers, two sheets of paper folded over, 2 crayons, and catalog with opportunity brochure.  Hand them to rowdy kids in stores-the moms will love you. Try these tips. Post below how your conversations go. I can’t wait to hear all about them.
