During my 18 years in Direct Sales, I have learned a lot. I have learned about myself, about business, about other people and most probably learned the most about what is important. When people get started in this business, they focus on what they can’t do or how they don’t compare to others when really they need to learn about the path they are on. On my journey, I try to pay it forward every day by helping others with the lessons I have learned. I thought I would put 55 of those lessons in a compiled list so that maybe others can use them or share with others. Maybe instead of wasting time, people can really focus on each stepping stone to teach them exactly what they need to know. Maybe we can take a minute and see how much we have done and say, “Heck ya I can do this.”
I learned a lot just by putting these down on paper. It made me feel like, “WOW! I really have accomplished growth and mindset.” If I can do that……I can do anything. I think more days we need to give ourselves a pat on the back in this business. It’s a true business. It’s hard work and anyone that says otherwise doesn’t have a firm grasp of what we do every single day.
Take a look at my life lessons below and let me know if you can relate.
DIRECT SALES LIFE LESSONS
1. Bad moods will come and go your whole life, and trying to make them go away, just makes them stay longer.
2. You can’t change other people. People have to want to change. You can’t motivate them. You can’t make them do something they just don’t care about. You can inspire but in the end, they have to do the work
3. If you meet someone and you don’ t know them well, assume they are crossing your path because they know more about something you are trying to learn.
4. Yelling never makes anything better.
5. Whenever you’re worried about what others will think of you, you’re really just worried about what you’ll think of you.
6. Every problem you have is your responsibility, regardless of who caused it.
7. Don’t try to deal with more than one minute at a time.
8. If you never doubt your beliefs, then you’re wrong a lot.
9. Figuring out what you want and managing it and one of the most powerful skills you can learn.
10. Get to the point quickly. People like to hear what you have to say when you don’t beat around the bush and give them the content they need.
11. Every consultant you ever come in contact with represents a story every bit as compelling and complicated as yours. Stop to listen & learn.
12. Whenever you say you hate something, guess what, it is going to hate you back, situations, people and objects.
13. Ralph Waldo Emerson and Napoleon Hill can teach you everything you need to learn about living with happiness and gratitude. In this day in age, maybe a little Gary Vaynerchuck too.
14. People embellish everything in general.
15. Anger shows weakness in your character. Violence proves this even more.
16. There is no perfect blue print to success. Nobody has it all figured out.
17. Everyone you meet is better than you at something.
18. Those who complain the most, accomplish the least.
19. Putting something off makes it instantly more difficult and even more scary.
20. When people are uncomfortable with being in the present, they fidget, watch for it.
21. Blame is the favorite pastime of those who dislike responsibility.
22. Accept you will die. To know and understand that means you are alive. (I finally accepted this listening to author Gary John Bishop)
23. A person who truly dares to be herself is as rare as a diamond.
24. Revenge is for the silly, petty and irresponsible.
25. If what you’re doing feels perfectly safe, then you AREN’T doing what you are suppose to be doing.
26. Proof is nothing but a collection of opinions that match your own.
27. Self-examination and determining you want a change is the only road that will lead you away from being miserable.
28. Getting exceptionally organized can change your life.
38. Be genuinely kind no matter what someone else’s opinion is of another person. Don’t be a follower. Make your own opinions.
30. If you aren’t happy single, you won’t be happy in a relationship.
31. Even if it costs no money, nothing is free if it takes time.
32. Social Media should be last on your to do list if you aren’t using it to build relationships. It is nothing more of a scrolling feed of who you will compare yourself to.
33. People think way to much and over complicate everything.
34. Words are probably the most powerful thing in the world. One horrible remark can wound someone for life.
35. It’s easy to make someone’s day just by taking a minute to be nice to them.
36. High quality is worth any quantity, in possessions, friends and experiences.
37. Wishing things were different is a great way to torment yourself.
38. The fewer possessions you have, it is quite funny how the more they will do for you.
39. Heard of a gut feeling? Its for a reason. Tension in your stomach will tell you immediately how you feel about something.
40. How you dress and how you hold yourself will change the mindset immediately of how others feel about you. Like it or not.
41. When you’re tired of your life, its time to listen to or read a book.
42. No one can survive without any friends. FIND YOUR TRIBE! The 3 or 4 you can count on no matter what.
43. Make your kids go outside and play. I’m not a parent, but I totally remember being a kid.
44. People want to learn from you, even kids. Keep it short and it will be more valuable.
45. The urge to punish others has much more to do with venting frustration than correcting how someone acts.
46. Splurge on a Mattress. You spend a third of your life on it.
47. If you take it personal, every time you hear no, you are stopping your career before you even start.
48. Nothing — ever — happens exactly like you pictured it.
49. A good nine out of ten bad things I’ve worried about never happened.
50. You can’t hide a bad mood from people who know you well, but you can always be kind, no matter what.
51. Sometimes you have to remove certain people from your life, even if they’re family.
52. Life is a journey alone, but you’ll have lots of visitors. Some of them are long-term, most aren’t.
53. Learn to be overly thankful. Say Thank you! Send a Thank you! Tell yourself Thank you! There is never enough Gratitude.
54. The ability to be happy is nothing other than the ability to come to terms with how things change.
55. We complicate everything new we want to try. Jump forward and figure things out as you go.
